Best Destination Wedding Venues in Asia — From Bali to Seoul
Asia is quietly becoming the world's most exciting destination wedding region. The combination of extraordinary venues, rich cultural traditions, exceptional hospitality, and remarkable value makes it irresistible for couples from across the globe.
After documenting destination weddings across eight Asian countries, here's our honest guide to the locations that consistently produce the most extraordinary celebrations.
Bali, Indonesia
Bali remains the undisputed queen of Asian destination weddings — and for good reason. The island offers three completely different wedding experiences depending on where you choose:
Uluwatu sits on dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. Clifftop ceremonies here — with nothing but blue sky and crashing waves behind you — produce some of the most breathtaking wedding images in the world. Venues like Alila Villas Uluwatu and The Edge offer infinity-pool receptions where the ocean becomes your dance floor backdrop.
Canggu is Bali's bohemian heart. Villa weddings here feel like private paradise — tropical gardens, open-air pavilions, barefoot elegance. The aesthetic is relaxed luxury, and it attracts creative couples who want their wedding to feel like an experience rather than an event.
Ubud is the spiritual centre. Surrounded by rice terraces, river valleys, and ancient temples, Ubud weddings carry a depth that coastal venues can't match. The light here is different — softer, greener, filtered through jungle canopy.
Best season: April through October. The dry season means reliable sunshine and comfortable temperatures.
Photographer insight: Bali's golden hour lasts longer than almost anywhere we've shot — the equatorial light lingers, giving you a generous window for portraits. Uluwatu sunsets are the most dramatic, but Ubud's dappled forest light produces the most editorial images.
Budget reality: Bali delivers luxury at a fraction of European prices. A villa wedding for 50 guests that would cost six figures in Tuscany can be executed beautifully in Bali for half that.
Seoul, South Korea
Seoul has emerged as one of the most exciting destination wedding locations in Asia — and the biggest surprise on our inquiry list this year.
The appeal is the cultural richness. A hanok ceremony — held in a traditional Korean wooden house — is one of the most visually striking wedding settings we've ever documented. The architecture, the traditional hanbok attire, the formality of the pyebaek ceremony — every element is photogenic.
Modern Seoul offers a different energy. Rooftop venues overlooking Gangnam, converted gallery spaces in Itaewon, and luxury hotels along the Han River provide contemporary backdrops for couples who want tradition and modernity in the same celebration.
Best season: April to May for cherry blossoms — the most romantic backdrop imaginable. September to October for autumn foliage — warm golds and deep reds across every frame.
Photographer insight: Korean wedding halls can be challenging — they're often formulaic spaces designed for efficiency rather than beauty. The magic happens when couples choose hanok venues or outdoor settings where the architecture and nature do the work. Cherry blossom season portraits are extraordinary but the window is narrow — roughly two weeks. Plan precisely.
Budget reality: mid-range by Asian standards. Less expensive than Japan, comparable to premium Bali venues. The cultural experience alone justifies the investment.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is the destination for couples who want adventure, authenticity, and something genuinely different from the mainstream.
Galle on the southern coast offers colonial charm — a Dutch-era fort town with boutique hotels, ocean views, and cobblestone streets that feel like stepping into another century. Wedding celebrations here combine Sri Lankan warmth with architectural beauty.
The hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya offers tea plantations, misty mountains, and a landscape that feels more like Scotland than South Asia. Intimate elopements here are unforgettable — just the couple, the mountains, and the clouds.
Best season: December through March for the west and south coasts. April through September for the east coast.
Photographer insight: Sri Lanka's light is unique — the Indian Ocean creates a quality of coastal light that's softer and warmer than typical tropical destinations. The hill country's frequent mist and cloud cover produces moody, atmospheric images that are completely different from the bright Bali aesthetic.
Budget reality: exceptional value. Sri Lanka is one of the most affordable luxury wedding destinations in Asia, with world-class hospitality at a fraction of Bali or Maldives pricing.
Dubai and the UAE
Dubai offers something no other destination can — desert grandeur and urban opulence in a single celebration.
Desert ceremonies are cinematic beyond words. Golden sand stretching to the horizon, luxury camp setups, the silence of the dunes at sunset. The visual drama requires almost no styling — the landscape is the design.
Fujairah on the east coast offers beach and mountain simultaneously — a quieter, more intimate alternative to the Dubai city spectacle, with the Hajar Mountains meeting the Gulf of Oman.
Dubai city delivers five-star excess — the Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, Madinat Jumeirah, and a roster of luxury hotels that cater to the most elaborate celebrations imaginable.
Best season: November through March. Dubai's winter is perfect — warm days, cool evenings, golden light. Avoid summer unless you want to melt.
Photographer insight: desert light is the most dramatic we work with. The golden hour in the Dubai desert lasts about 40 minutes and produces colours — deep oranges, purples, and golds — that look like they've been enhanced in post-production. They haven't. The desert just does that.
Budget reality: premium to ultra-premium. Dubai caters to couples who want the best of everything and are willing to invest accordingly.
Tokyo and Japan
Japan offers a wedding experience that's equal parts tradition and precision. Every detail is considered. Every ritual has meaning. The aesthetic sensibility is unmatched.
Traditional shrine ceremonies — at venues like Meiji Shrine in Tokyo or Fushimi Inari in Kyoto — are breathtakingly beautiful. The simplicity of Shinto rituals, the architectural perfection of the shrine, and the quiet reverence of the ceremony create images that feel timeless.
Modern Tokyo offers rooftop venues, design-forward restaurants, and a city that photographs like a film set. The contrast between neon-lit streets and serene temple gardens gives couples endless visual variety within a single celebration.
Osaka and Kyoto offer food culture, historic temples, and a more relaxed pace. Kyoto's bamboo groves and Osaka's street food scene provide completely different atmospheres for pre-wedding sessions.
Best season: late March to mid-April for cherry blossoms — the most photographed two weeks in Japan. October to November for autumn colours.
Photographer insight: cherry blossom timing is everything. The bloom window is roughly 10-14 days and varies by year. Couples planning a cherry blossom wedding should have a backup aesthetic in mind — because nature doesn't guarantee timing. That said, when it works, it's the most beautiful natural backdrop on earth.
Budget reality: mid-to-high range. Japan is not cheap, but the quality of every experience — food, service, aesthetics — justifies every yen.
Thailand
Thailand offers three completely different wedding destinations:
Chiang Mai in the north brings mountain temples, lantern-lit evenings, and a cultural depth that beach destinations can't match. Ceremonies at ancient temples surrounded by jungle-covered mountains feel spiritual and grounded.
Phuket and Koh Samui deliver classic tropical luxury — beach ceremonies, resort receptions, and turquoise water in every direction. These islands have mature wedding infrastructure, meaning vendors, venues, and logistics are well-established.
Bangkok is the wild card — rooftop bars with skyline views, riverside restaurants, cultural fusion in every direction. A Bangkok wedding is urban, energetic, and completely different from the island experience.
Best season: November through February — cool, dry, and comfortable across the entire country.
Photographer insight: Thailand's beaches are popular for a reason, but the most visually interesting weddings we've seen here happen in Chiang Mai. The mountain light, the temple architecture, and the evening lantern traditions create images that are uniquely Thai — not just "tropical beach wedding."
Budget reality: Thailand offers the best value in Asian destination weddings. Luxury-level celebrations at prices that make European and even Bali venues look expensive by comparison.
Why Asia.
Asia offers something Europe can't — extraordinary cultural depth at extraordinary value. A couple can have a world-class destination wedding in Bali, Sri Lanka, or Thailand for the same investment that would cover a modest celebration in Tuscany or the South of France.
But it's not just about cost. Asia's wedding destinations offer experiences — cultural richness, natural beauty, and a quality of hospitality — that create celebrations couples and their guests never forget.
The destination wedding market is global now. Couples from New York, London, Sydney, and Toronto are choosing Asia not because it's affordable, but because it's extraordinary.
